Villamor leads Pioneer to quarters

PIONEER Elastoseal secured a quarterfinal seat in Leg 4 of the PBA 3x3 Season 2 Third Conference after taking down third-leg ruler Barangay Ginebra, 21-14, Saturday at Robinsons Novaliches.

Denice Villamor dropped 12 points spiked by a five-of-seven clip from deep to lead the Katibays to the clinching bounceback aftert their 14-16 loss to Purefoods in the opening sessions.

Pioneer grabbed the No. 1 seeding in Pool A after garnering the highest tie break points against fellow 1-1 squads Ginebra and Purefoods. The Katibays toted 35 markers versus the Gin Kings' 34 and the Titans' 33.

Back-to-back-seeking Ginebra, which opened its bid with a 20-17 verdict over the Titans, pulled it off despite the later loss to Pioneer, thanks to the two-ball by Donald Gumaru that ultimately allowed them to overtake Purefoods at No. 2.

Leg 2 winner TnT, out for redemption after missing the semifinals last leg, stormed to emphatic wins over NorthPort, 22-15, and J&T Express, 22-17, en route to No. 1 in Pool D.

Leg 3 runner-up Platinum Karaoke also swept its way to the Last-8 via back-to-back romps over Pool B opponents Terrafirma, 21-9, and Blackwater, 20-15.

The Red President marched on as B No. 2 with 1-1, gaining from their 21-20 overtime squeaker over the Dyip (0-2) earlier.

Meanwhile, Meralco beat Cavitex, 21-19, to clinch the No. 1 in Pool C. The Bolts emerged on top of a three-way tie at 1-1 with the Braves and San Miguel Beer with 39 tiebreak points. The Braves, who edged SMB earlier, 20-19, took the second seed with 39 while shutting the door on the Beermen (38). (OL)
